The Archives of Traditional Music from the Libraries of Indiana University Bloomington has released historical recordings of Chinese music. The Berthold Laufer China Collection features the Chinese music recorded in an ethnographic fieldwork in China conducted by Berthold Laufer. The digitalized music now available is made from 400 cylinders phonographs, a recording device in the 1880s, which were recorded between 1901-1902 in China. Please visit the Collection to learn more about the collection and explore the historical sounds of Chinese music, i.e. folksongs, opera, and instrumental music.
