How Much Can I Upload?

Each HKU academic staff, researcher, and RPg student will be automatically assigned 100GB of personal storage on HKU DataHub. You can upload:

  • Files up to 5GB in size via web browser interface, and up to 5TB* via FTP uploader

  • A maximum of 500 items

  • A maximum of 500 files per item

*Requesting for extra storage is available for accommodating your research needs. If you need more storage, please refer to the guide on “Request for Extra Storage” in the section Managing Dataset.

If you would like to upload a large number of files or files larger than 5GB, please refer to the section “FTP Uploader” and “Figshare API” on the Upload Data page.

If you have further enquiries, please contact us via Email-a-Librarian (select To: Research Data).

What Shouldn't I Upload?

Thesis should not be uploaded onto HKU DataHub. RPg students should follow their respective faculty/department's requirements and procedures in submitting their theses.

Final version / Publisher's version of any scholarly publications should not be uploaded. Instead, depositors are encouraged to enter the Digital Object Identifier (DOI) of your publication in your dataset record so that it can be linked to your publication for easy access.

Accepted versions of any scholarly publications (e.g. journal article manuscript) should continue to be uploaded onto the Research Information Management System (RIMS) from HKU Portal. It will be published in the Scholars Hub.

Large, complex datasets with specific industry data standards may be better managed in discipline-specific repositories. If your dataset have already been deposited in any external repositories, you can create a linked metadata record on HKU DataHub with a URL pointing to where the data are stored.

Please contact us if you are unsure about what should/shouldn’t be uploaded on HKU DataHub.
