HKU DataHub: The Guide

HKU DataHub

HKU DataHub is the institutional data repository for hosting research data, other forms of scholarly outputs, and educational resources produced by HKU researchers, students, staff and their collaborators. HKU DataHub powered by Figshare is a cloud platform for storing, citing, sharing, and discovering research data and all scholarly outputs.

FAIR Data Principles

The FAIR data principles is a set of guidelines that help researchers make better use of, and engage with a broader audience with, their research data. First introduced in 2016 (Wilkinson et al.), the principles aim to improve discoverability, accessibility and reusability of the data to be shared openly, making them more valuable and maximizing their use, re-use and impact. The principles have since been widely accepted and adopted by academic communities and research institutions worldwide.

FAIR stands for Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable. Data that meet these principles are more discoverable and reusable, which in turn increase your research’s exposure. DataHub fully supports the FAIR data principles, allowing researchers to share and publish their data FAIR.

Funders and Journals Data Sharing Policies

Funder Requirements

A growing number of funding agencies, especially overseas funders, impose policies for research data management and sharing. For instance:

Journal Requirements

Many journals have data sharing policies that require datasets which are necessary to replicate their study’s findings must be made available to editors and referees at the time of manuscript submission, and some are requiring the data to be shared with the scientific community as a condition of publication. Several journals also require data availability statements to be included in publications. For example:

Compliance with Funder and Journal Requirements

HKU DataHub supports issuance of Digital Object Identifiers (DOI) to each dataset record, enables sharing via private links for confidential peer-review and fulfills the FAIR data principle after publication. Depositing research data and records on the repository enables HKU researchers to comply with the requirements of the funder of their research and journals that their work were submitted to.

How Can I Use HKU DataHub

Acquiring Digital Object Identifiers (DOI) for your published items

  • Acquire a unique persistent identifier, i.e. Digital Object Identifiers (DOI) for your published datasets and materials, making them accessible to the wider community. Published items on DataHub are also indexed in Google Scholar and Google Dataset Search for greater discoverability.

Sharing your work with flexible access options

  • Deposit and control access options for your valuable research data. Manage access to your work by making your data private, shareable only with selected individuals or groups, or publicly available.
  • Set embargo periods so that you can hold off publishing your research data until your research is published.

Building your portfolio

  • Grow your research profile by building a portfolio of work that can be used as supportive evidence when applying for grants, funding, and jobs.
  • Integrate your ORCID ID to your DataHub account for a comprehensive author profile
  • Track usage statistics, including views, downloads, citations, and Altmetrics, of your published data.

Collaborating with others

  • Share project materials and collaborate with others in a project space.

Showcasing deliverables of your research projects and educational resources

  • Showcase all the materials produced in your research project in a project page.
  • Demonstrate the quality of your teaching by publishing your educational resources or student-generated contents.

Complying to open practices in scientific research

  • Meet funders' and publishers' requirements on data sharing by making your research data publicly available.

Depositor's Agreement

Before depositing your dataset in the HKU DataHub, please read carefully and accept the terms and conditions stated in the Depositor's Agreement.
