 Introduction by Susan Youens

“The composition of his second song cycle to texts by Wilhelm Müller had indeed required unusual labor, unusual even for a composer given to creating multiple settings of a text in his concern to produce the best possible musical reading. … … The autograph manuscript actually consists of two separate manuscripts. The first twelve songs, or Part I, are a mixture of fair copies and heavily emended first versions; the remaining  twelve songs in Part II, which Schubert called the Fortsetzung, or “Continuation,” are entirely in fair copy. The division reflects the singular compositional history of Winterreise, both composed and published in two halves. … … ” ~  Susan Youens

Here, facsimiles of the autograph score and the three extant holograph sketches are presented together with a reprint of the first edition, a visually attractive and accurate publication that appeared less than six months after the composer’s death.” xi  ~ Martin Chusid
