ChatGPT 4.0 passes dental licensing examinations

HONG KONG, China: The omnipresence of artificial intelligence (AI) in today’s society has brought with it numerous transformations in work dynamics. Further exploring its potential in healthcare settings, a recent study has examined the performance of generative AI in dental licensing examinations. It found that the newer version of ChatGPT could answer questions from dental licensing examinations proficiently, thus demonstrating a great potential to change the way dental professionals are trained in the future and even to improve the communication between dentists and patients. Paper title: Silane adhesion mechanism in dental applications and surface treatments: A review

Author: Matinlinna, JP (Matinlinna, Jukka Pekka) ; Lung, CYK (Lung, Christie Ying Kei) ; Tsoi, JKH (Tsoi, James Kit Hon)

Abstract: Objective. To give a current review of silane adhesion chemistry, applications of silane coupling agents and related surface pretreatment methods in contemporary dentistry. Methods. Silane coupling agents are adhesion promoters to chemically unify dissimilar materials used in dentistry. Silanes are very effective in adhesion promotion between resin composites and silica-based or silica-coated indirect restorative materials. It is generally accepted that for non-silica-based restorations, surface pretreatment is a mandatory preliminary step to increase the silica content and then, with help of silane, improve resin bonding. This review discusses the silane-based adhesion chemistry, silane applications in dentistry, surface pretreatment methods, and presents the recent development of silane coupling agents.

ADA announces major changes to radiography safety protocols

CHICAGO, US: An expert panel established by the American Dental Association (ADA) Council on Scientific Affairs has published new recommendations for safety during dental imaging, considering the essential balance between the clinical value of radiographs and the need to minimise radiation exposure. They found that modern digital radiography and precise beam targeting have rendered lead aprons and thyroid collars unnecessary. These protective measures can interfere with image quality, potentially necessitating repeat exposures, which the recommendations aim to avoid.. Amalgam and pregnancy: Mercury vapour limits exceeded in new study

LAKELAND, Fla., US: Although an increasing number of dentists and patients are choosing resin composites as restorative materials, amalgam is still widely used despite its disadvantages, such as poor aesthetics, harm to the environment and evidence that it may have harmful health effects on human health. Adding to the existing evidence on amalgam toxicity, a new study examined the impact of mercury vapour exposure from amalgam among pregnant American women and found that a large number of cases exceeded the safety limits set by the US Environmental Protection Agency. The finding is especially troubling in the light of the heightened risk of harmful effects on the foetus caused by exposure to mercury vapour during pregnancy. Intra-oral scanners helpful in paediatric dental communication—study

GIESSEN, Germany: Researchers in Germany have studied the efficacy of intra-oral scanners as a communication tool in paediatric dentistry by comparing the comprehension of information provided in verbal explanations with that supplemented by a scan of the patient’s mouth. According to the researchers, the technology had a positive effect, and the use of intra-oral scans could lead to greater treatment acceptance among primary guardians.
