Library break - Mark A Wish

Dear Students,

As the academic year nears its end and exams and deadlines loom, you might spend long hours at the libraries. While studying is essential, remember to take breaks to recharge!

From April 19th, visit the Tin Ka Ping Education Library (Level 3, Old Wing, Main Library) and check out the ‘Make-a-Wish’ Tree. When you need a break, grab a sticky note, write down your wishes, and add them to the tree. With your wishes, make the Wish Tree grow bigger and share your aspirations with fellow students!

We also provide to-do lists and wish lists onsite to help you stay organized during the busy exam period. Keeping track of tasks can improve your focus and productivity.

Good luck with your studies, and remember to take care of yourself during this hectic time!

Best wishes,

Dear staff and students,

We are excited to invite you to join the training series, "Facilitating Learning and Research with Generative AI: Suggestions from Librarians". This online series covers:

  • insights of librarians into the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Generative AI (GenAI);
  • applications of GenAI in university learning contexts;
  • the challenges and ethical use of AI technology;
  • practical techniques and real-life examples of using AI technologies to enhance learning and research experiences, with GenAI tools for literature search, text generation, image creation, slides generation and speech coaching; and
  • advanced topics in AI model training and fine-tuning.

Join the 6 training sessions at:

Session 1: Introduction to AI, Generative AI, and Large Language Models

Speakers:

  • Ms. Katherine Choi (Assistant Librarian, HKU Libraries)
  • Mr. Terry Chung (Digital Scholarship Librarian, HKU Libraries)
  • Dr. K. M. Ku (Associate Librarian, HKU Libraries)
  • Ms. Mahboobani Vanessa Ramesh (Data Services & Information Research Librarian, HKU Libraries)
  • Mr. Gary Wong (Systems Librarian, HKU Libraries)

This session provides a comprehensive understanding of AI, its historical context, the role of neural networks, the importance of datasets in training, and the human involvement in shaping AI systems. Practical implementations and the benefits of using AI will also be discussed. It covers the following topics:

  • acknowledging the pioneering works of scientists and their contributions since the 1950s.

  • discussing the development of AI over the years, tracing major milestones and breakthroughs that have shaped the current landscape.

  • exploring the concept of neural networks, shedding light on their architecture and how they have revolutionized AI systems by mimicking the human brain's functionality.

  • discussing Generative AIs that can generate creative and innovative content.

Session 2: Facilitating Your Research with Scite

Speaker: Mr. Wu Yan, Trainer from Scite

This session is designed to introduce features that Scite offers on the general level, with searches and AI chats on the detailed level. During the workshop, participants will learn about

  • using scenarios and an overview of scite.ai functionalities.

  • utilising and benefit from smart citation.

  • supercharging Large Language Models (LLMs) to accelerate academic study.

Session 3: Enhancing Your Learning and Research Experience with Generative AI Tools

Speaker: Ms. Cindy Liang (Learning Experience Instructor, HKU Libraries)

This session is suitable for novice learners and researchers. It covers the use of Generative AI (GenAI) tools to enhance learning and research experiences, featuring HKU ChatGPT as an example. An overview of other selected GenAI tools to fit different learning and research needs will also be introduced. By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • recognise the available GenAI tools for learning and research at HKU.

  • practise using GenAI tools tactfully.

  • understand the dos and don'ts of using GenAI tools in general and at HKU.

Session 4: Falsely Accused of AI Cheating? How to avoid this?

Speaker: Dr. Woei Fuh Wong (Consulting Manager, iGroup Asia Pacific)

The session is designed to help attendees navigate these issues and use AI technology responsibly in their research. It tackles the challenge of being falsely accused of AI-assisted cheating, especially with the increasing reliance on tools like ChatGPT. It briefly explains what constitutes cheating, including plagiarism and falsification. Researchers will learn how to properly leverage ChatGPT for publishing by addressing key topics such as:

  • The risks of presenting AI-generated work as one's own;
  • The importance of proper acknowledgment when rephrasing content;
  • Correct citation practices to avoid errors; and
  • Implementing disclaimers to distinguish between original and AI-generated content clearly.
