Weill: Die Dreigroschenoper

Weill, Kurt. 1928.  Die Dreigroschenoper (The Beggar's Opera) Ein Stück mit Musik in einem Vorspiel und acht Bildern nach dem Englischen des John Gay, übersetzt von Elisabeth Hauptmann Deutsche Bearbeitung von Bert Brecht Klavierauszug mit Text von Norbert Gingold. Wien: Universal-Edition

Call no. : Music 782.1 W42 d7 G

Folio. Full dark brown cloth with original publisher's decorative wrappers printed in colour bound in.

Signature and handstamp of Ernst Rudolf Mayer, opera director of the State Theatre in Luzerne, to title and final leaf.

With names of performers added in pencil to cast list, together with a note relative to a performance in April 1929, most probably in Mayer's hand (the earliest performance in Switzerland was in Zurich on January 29, 1929).

First Edition

The most successful of Weill's collaborations with playwright Bertolt Brecht, Die Dreigroschenoper, adapted from Peter Gay's The Beggar's Opera (London, 1728), was first performed in Berlin on August 31, 1928. It was quite successful on Broadway in the 1950s, its signature tune being the immensely popular Mack the Knife.

An interesting copy with association to an early performance of the work in Switzerland.
